Mechanical roles where the prototype is not the product
Every mechanical engineer at a deep-tech company is somewhere between a prototype that works once and a product that works every time. The interesting question is which end of that the role sits at, and whether you are allowed to move along it. A role at the prototype end is design freedom with no manufacturing partner yet. A role at the series end is tolerances, suppliers and a design you did not draw. The ad says mechanical engineer for both. We ask which it is.
What we ask before we post one
The questions the ad never answers.
- Where is the product now, prototype, pilot batch or series, and what is the next milestone?
- Who owns the drawing when it goes to a supplier, and who signs the change?
- Which CAD and PLM tools are in use, and is there a single source of truth for the model?
- How does a design decision get tested, on a bench here or at a partner somewhere else?
- What was the last field failure, and what changed in the design because of it?
- Who decides when a part is good enough to ship?
What we will not post
We do not post a mechanical role where the contract is with an agency and the ad does not say so.
Hardware roles here are on site or hybrid. The ad says which, and how many days.
